Neurosurgery Hospitals and Clinics

What is Neurosurgery?

Neurosurgery is operation of the nervous system.
Most men and women think of neurosurgery as brain operation — but it is quite a bit more!
It is the medical specialty concerned with the identification and therapy of of patients with trauma to, or diseases/disorders of the brain, spinal cord and spinal column, and peripheral nerves within all areas of the body. The specialty of neurosurgical care includes both pediatric and adult patients. Dependent upon the nature of the accident or disorder a neurological surgeon may offer surgical or nonsurgical care.

Who’s a Neurosurgeon?
A physician who specializes in neurosurgery. Neurosurgeons are not solely brain surgeons, they are clinically trained neurosurgical specialists who can also help patients suffering from neck and back pain as well as a host of other disorders ranging from trigeminal neuralgia to head injury and Parkinson’s disease.

To become a neurosurgeon, a doctor must achieve the following:
graduate from an accredited medical school (four years);
complete a six months to one-year surgical operation in the Department of Surgery, this assembles fundamental clinical skills;
Complete seven years at the neurosurgical residency program accredited by the American Council on Graduate Medical Education

During this residency training, neurosurgeons are educated in all aspects of neurosurgery, including the cerebrovascular system, both the spine and spinal cord, trauma, tumors, pain management and pediatric surgery. Residents complete a minimum of 60 weeks of training at the neurological sciences, with 36 of these months are dedicated to clinical neurosurgery and at least 3 months devoted to clinical neurology.

Some neurosurgeons choose to complete an additional fellowship in a particular specialized area of study after their residency.
After residency training, neurosurgeons become board certified, and continue with applicable training.

What is the role of the Neurosurgeon?
Neurosurgeons provide the surgical and non-operative direction (i.e., prevention, diagnosis, evaluation, treatment, critical care and rehabilitation) of neurological ailments. Because neurosurgeons have extensive training in the identification of neurological disease, emergency room physicians, neurologists, internists, family practitioners, and osteopaths often call upon them for consultations.
